Underarm Rashes

Expert Ways to Deal with Underarm Rashes

UNDERARM RASH – An Annoying nuisance?

Rashes can drive you nuts… And a rash in or on your armpit/underarm is more than exasperating!

Most of us have undergone that disagreeable feeling – ‘the armpit rash’ that comes in all the shapes and sizes. Some appear bumpy and red, some flaky and white, some may hurt, and some itchy ones will leave you glowering away to a corner to scratch. But every cloud has a silver lining and so does this. These rashes are very common in this area (the skin under the arm is extremely delicate), are temporary, easily treatable and even preventable.

TYPES AND CAUSES OF ARMPIT RASHES

Given the sensitivity of the area, underarm rashes can happen to anyone because of varied factors. Ascertaining the cause of the rash is extremely important before taking measures to treat it and prevent it in future. Some of the most common causes and types are –

CONTACT DERMATITIS

This is a very common cause of skin irritation which occurs when you come into contact with an allergen or irritant. Many substances can cause such reactions, for instance, the fragrance in your deodorant or lotion, a new laundry detergent or even the fabric of your shirt. Such rashes are usually red, itchy, dry and can develop into blisters.

CHAFING

Chafing occurs when the skin rubs against itself for too long or against the fabric, causing friction. Further, friction combined with heat and moisture, breaks down the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin that provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone) and can cause inflammation. Chafing is often accompanied by redness, stinging and burning sensation, swelling and in some severe cases cracked and bleeding skin. You can easily and safely prevent chafing with some really good and effective anti-chafing gels available in India now.

HEAT / SWEAT RASH

Heat Rash

Another common underarm rash that is caused by hot and sultry weather and tight-fitting clothes is heat rash. Sweat ducts are blocked and perspiration builds up beneath the skin, causing a bumpy and sometimes painful inflammation. Symptoms may also include mild discomfort and itching, but they can become severe with continued excessive sweating or lack of treatment.

ATOPIC DERMATITIS (ECZEMA)

Eczema is another common cause of irritation which is found in the folds of the body such as armpits. This rash is accompanied by intense itch which people can’t resist, causing bleeding or oozing fluid due to continuous scratching. This skin condition is usually diagnosed in childhood and can cause flare-ups several times during the year.

CANDIDA

Candida is a yeast infection that grows best on warm, moist skin, and underarms serves as the ideal breeding ground. Poor hygiene, tight clothes and hot weather can increase the likelihood of this type of infection and can worsen it. The symptoms can include swelling, itching, scaling, and red skin rashes.

WAYS TO DEAL

Some of the rashes disappear on their own and some need to be dealt with. Most of them can be efficaciously treated using an amalgam of medications and lifestyle changes.

STAY ON TOP OF YOUR HYGIENE GAME

During the rash and beyond, staying on top of your hygiene game is the most imperative way to deal with armpit rashes. Shower regularly with a mild cleanser to wash away bacteria and sweat. Dry the area under the arm thoroughly and if possible air-dry rather than using a towel.

SWITCH UP YOUR PRODUCTS

If you observe that some of the deodorants you use or other skin products are causing a rash, stop using them right away. If you can’t do without them, switch up your products with natural ones or opt for a scent-free range for sensitive skin.

WEAR LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHES

Loose-fitting clothes made with breathable fabric allows your skin to breathe, which is so important for healthy armpits. Wearing breathable clothes makes it easier for your armpits to get rid of toxins and also sweat doesn’t pool on the sensitive area.
